WELCOME TO DAY 3

WELCOME TO WEEK 3

Well, we are off to a terrific start!! I thought I would start our time together with a good laugh.  Much research has been done on how laughter can actually reduce stress.  The baby in the video is my grandson playing with my husband. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The online postings/replies/discussions were great! I apologize greatly for the misunderstanding about the new blog that will be posted each week on D2L (under content).   Because I did not communicate that as well as I should have I would like to go over it one more time.
Things that you can come to expect over this semester are:
·         A weekly blog will appear onto D2L under content every Thursday by midnight (except on the weeks that we will be meeting in class).
·         An email making you aware when I have uploaded the new blog link. This email will be sent to your UWRF email address so please check here often.
·         I will send an email to you every time that I add something or modify information on our D2L site.  For example, you might notice today that I have posted the information that I emailed you today in the “news section” of the front page of our D2L site.
·         All items listed in the syllabus (i.e. readings, postings and discussions, etc.) are due by 1:00 on the Saturday they are listed in the syllabus.
·         All items addressed in the “weekly blogs” are due the following Saturday.   For example, I will post the Day 3 blog today, Thursday, February 9.  In this blog, I will ask you to complete a few things.  Please have those items completed by Saturday, February 18 at 1:00.
Let me take a minute to explain the “why”:
The way that I have set up the course is that on the days we meet “online” I try to provide a system similar to if we were meeting face-to-face that week.  I want to create opportunities for you to engage in the content, engage with me in a meaningful way and finally, a way to collaborate with each other.  In other words, if we were meeting face-to-face in a graduate-level  course, you come to expect a few things: One being, I would give more information (content) and/or build from the content that was read in preparation for the course. Two, I would provide a “space” or time for you to discuss what was read in relation to the information that had been provided as well as with the prior knowledge that each of you bring to the community.  Therefore, the “weekly” blog that I send you is a space to do this.  Here is what you would do during class if we were meeting.  On the syllabus is the same requirement that I would expect if we were meeting face-to-face.

Now some of you have asked what it means to meet “online."   This will mean different things for the various weeks.  For example, last week and this week it simply means going online at a time that works best for you (we all do NOT need to be online at the same time).  That being said, please do make sure you are getting your items posted in a timely fashion so your group members are not waiting to complete a task.  Try to be respectful to all the members in your group.  Please feel free to use the coffee shop-open discussion area to share/discuss within your groups.
Some weeks we will need to meet together at one time.  For example, I have placed you all in groups to get together to hold a literature discussion.  Other weeks we will all need to be online “Google Hangout” at the same time to hold a discussion.  I will do my best to give you plenty of notice to these meetings, so you can plan accordingly.

o   Tell us the three grade levels (e.g., K-2, 4-6, 9-12, or any other combination between k-12), your theme will address.  Please make sure that when choosing texts to keep in mind there will be multiple levels of development in reading including troubled readers, ELL students, developmentally delayed students etc.   In other words, if you are teaching seventh grade English, focus mainly on the middle school grades, but include literature to challenge mature readers.

GUIDELINES FOR CREATING YOUR THEMATIC UNIT BLOG

GUIDELINES FOR YOUR THEMATIC PLAN BLOG SITE:

Here you will find the required elements to the blog you will be creating and building throughout this course.
Your blog will be the space where you can collect, share, display and discuss your thematic unit.  I have placed you in groups of four:

Blog Group #1 (Please note that his group may have different members than your meeting group)
Blog Group #2 (Please note that his group may have different members than your meeting group)

Christine Scheid
Heidi Sirek

Cadi
O’Connell

Gretta Kesselring

Paula Johnson

Blog Group #3 (Please note that this group may have different members than your meeting group)
Blog Group #4 (Please note that this group may have different members than your meeting group)

Amy Klein

Jennifer Kieren

Heather Hinz

Kelli Newman

Lynsey Gausman

If there is not a blog address next to your name this means you do not have a complete blog addressed posted onto D2L.  Please make sure that you make your blog address available for all on the D2L-Discussion-Blog address.

The people in your group will be the people that you MUST “follow.”  This means you will read their blogs (they will read yours), give you helpful feedback, pose thoughtful questions, give guidance and support and engage in meaningful conversations centered on your theme and the literature you are choosing.  Your first feedback needs to be posted on each member of your blog group’s blog on or before 1:00, Saturday, February 18,

TIPS TO CREATING YOUR BLOG

TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR BLOG

The purpose of this blog site is to create a space to collect most of the information that you will need for your final unit paper for this class.  The following tips will make this process so much easier for you.
  1. ·         Include a large amount of detail in relation to the books that you post each week.  The more information that you include now the less you will need to do later down the road.

  • ·         Look over the final requirements for the thematic unit so you are aware of what books you will need to have and how many of each in a genre.  At times I will only require that you post 1 or 2, but if you know you are going to need 4 or 5 and have the time now.  You might want to go ahead and post them here for safe keeping, so that you can quickly retrieve them.
  • ·         Place a photo of each book next to each discussion that you have on a book.  This will help you if you choose to use this unit in your classroom to quickly scan over your blog to find a text or information about a text.
  • ·         You will need to create an annotated bibliography (we will look at a couple of examples of these soon) for all the books in your unit, if you feel comfortable starting on this process I encourage you to begin recording this information as you post your books.
  • ·         If you are aware of a good text for someone in your group that would be a good fit for their theme. Please, please share that with them. I am sure they would also be very appreciative if you would upload a photo of the book as well.
HHave fun!
